Moving out is the one time every corner of a home gets looked at. A landlord with a clipboard, a property manager comparing against the move-in photos, or a buyer on the final walkthrough: all of them check the same handful of places first. Miss those and it shows. Get them right and the rest of the house reads as clean.
This checklist is organized by room, so you can work through it yourself or hand it to a cleaner. At the end, we cover timing, Tucson-specific problem spots and when it is worth paying for help.
Before you start
- Remove all belongings, trash and food. A move-out clean works on an empty home.
- Take out the trash and recycling for good, not just the kitchen can.
- Get your landlord’s or agent’s cleaning checklist if they have one. Following it is the safest approach.
- Gather supplies: all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, a descaler for hard water, a degreaser, microfiber cloths, a mop, a vacuum with a hose attachment, and a bucket.
- Open a window or run a fan. Cleaning products and dust are easier on you with some airflow.
Work from the top down and from the back of the home to the front door. Dust and drips fall, so floors always come last.
Kitchen
The kitchen is where most deductions come from, so start here.
- Empty and wipe the inside of the fridge and freezer: shelves, drawers, door bins and rubber gaskets. Pull out and wash removable shelves.
- Leave the fridge door propped open after cleaning if you are unplugging it.
- Clean the oven inside, including the racks and door glass. For baked-on grease, use an oven cleaner and give it time to work.
- Degrease the range hood and the stovetop, including burner pans or drip bowls.
- Wipe the microwave inside and out.
- Wipe the inside of every cabinet and drawer, then the fronts and handles.
- Scrub the sink and polish the faucet. Hard water scale shows here first.
- Clean the countertops and backsplash.
- Wipe the dishwasher inside, and clean its door edges and filter.
- Sweep and mop the floor, including along the edges and under the appliances you can safely pull out.
Bathrooms
- Scrub the shower or tub, walls, floor, and the grout lines.
- Remove soap scum and hard water film from glass doors. A descaling product or white vinegar works on mineral deposits.
- Descale the faucet, showerhead and drain cover.
- Clean the toilet inside the bowl, the outside, the seat, the hinges and the base.
- Wipe the vanity inside and out, plus the medicine cabinet shelves.
- Polish the mirrors and any glass shelves.
- Wipe the exhaust fan cover, since it collects dust quickly.
- Mop the floor, including behind the toilet.
Bedrooms, living areas and hallways
- Dust ceiling fans (blades, tops and motor housing) and light fixtures.
- Wipe baseboards in every room. They show the most dirt and often get skipped.
- Wipe doors, door frames, light switches and outlet covers.
- Clean the inside of closets: shelves, rods and floors.
- Spot-clean walls where you can, especially around switches, and remove scuffs with a damp cloth or a melamine sponge.
- Dust vents, returns and the tops of door frames.
- Vacuum carpets, then vacuum and mop hard floors.
Windows, tracks and blinds
This is the checklist section people forget, and in Tucson it matters.
- Vacuum the window tracks and sliding door tracks. Desert dust and grit pack into them, especially after monsoon season.
- Wipe window sills and frames.
- Dust or wipe blinds slat by slat. Dust sticks to them in this climate.
- Clean the inside glass, and the outside glass if you can reach it.
- Check screens for dust and cobwebs.
Garage, patio and entry
- Sweep out the garage floor and knock down cobwebs.
- Remove anything left behind, like paint cans, old tools and boxes.
- Sweep the patio, porch and entry.
- Wipe the front door inside and out.
- Check that any swamp cooler or HVAC filters your lease expects you to replace are done.
The last pass
- Walk the home with a flashlight or your phone light to catch missed spots.
- Do a final sweep of the floors, finishing at the front door.
- Photograph every room once it is clean. Time-stamped photos protect you if there is a dispute later.
- Take your trash out and lock up.
Tucson-specific trouble spots
Every city has its usual problems. Here are ours.
Hard water scale. Mineral deposits on faucets, shower glass and the toilet waterline are the top items on Tucson move-out complaints. They do not wipe away. A descaling cleaner left on for several minutes does the work, and glass that has been scaled for months may need patient scrubbing.
Dust in tracks and vents. After a monsoon summer, window tracks and air vents hold more dust than you expect. A vacuum with a brush attachment and a damp cloth do the trick.
Tile and grout. Saltillo and ceramic tile floors with grout lines trap dust. Mopping alone leaves gray lines along the grout.
Swamp cooler residue. If the home has an evaporative cooler, check nearby ceilings and vents for mineral staining and dust buildup.
When to hire a cleaner
A move-out cleaning is one of the hardest cleaning jobs because everything is on the list at once, and you are usually short on time. Hiring help is worth it when:
- You are moving a long distance and cannot come back for a second pass
- The oven or shower needs serious work
- You are juggling a closing date or a key handover deadline
- You would rather spend your last day on the move itself
Our move-out cleaning covers the whole checklist above, including the inside of the fridge, oven and cabinets, baseboards and every floor. For a four-bedroom, three-bath house of 2,400 square feet, the estimate is $415 to $525. A three-bedroom, two-bath house of 1,600 square feet is $305 to $390. Move-out cleanings are priced at 1.7 times a standard cleaning, with those inside-appliance extras already folded in, so they are not billed as add-ons.
Book it once the home is empty and a day or two before the walkthrough. Our cost guide explains how the numbers are calculated. We cannot promise a full deposit, since that is the landlord’s call, but we clean to the standard most move-out checklists ask for, and we are glad to work from yours.
Common questions
When should I schedule a move-out cleaning?
Once the home is empty and a day or two before your walkthrough or key handover, so nothing gets dirty again before it is inspected.
Will cleaning guarantee my deposit back?
No one can promise that, because the decision belongs to your landlord or property manager. A thorough clean to their checklist gives you the best chance.
